Reading on his own

T has really come into his own with reading. We've been reading 20 minutes a day since October as a part of his Pizza Hut reading program. Usually he does it when I tell him it's time to read. T usually does not fight it and is sometimes even enthusiastic about it.

Lately, in the past couple of weeks, T has actually read on his own without prompting! I've been so excited! I know that I cannot force him to love reading. I know that at the age of 6, I was not a booklover. It wasn't until a few years later that I realized my love for reading and practically lived at the library. So I've been so excited to see him grab a book on his own and actually read it.

In the past, T has gotten books and looked at the pictures. He would actually read the book unless I told him to. It was almost as if he didn't know he was capable of doing so. That is, until I reminded him that he is perfectly able to read a book on his own.

I've been borrowing leveled reading books from the Easy to Read section of the library. T has read all of the Level 1 books with the exception of a few series which Level 1 were not really beginning readers. Now we're onto Level 2. And T seems to be having no difficulty at all.

Today, T even picked up one of the picture books and read it! Usually he just picks one of the leveled books in the library bag and ignores the pictures books. I think T finally has the confidence to believe that he can read! I am so proud of him!

So we've been doing spelling words and I've been combining them with a unit on Cinderellas from around the world.

These were T's sentences, misspellings and all. So cute!
